When the rate confirmation carries a company name and no number, the trucking company lookup runs the other way: search the 4,494,460 carriers in the census by legal name, by the name they trade under, or by state, and take the USDOT number from the result.
Why the search misses
Names in the register are not the names on the truck
A carrier files a legal name and, separately, a name it does business as. Performance Transportation LLC trades as Performance Food Group; searching either string finds USDOT 270150, and searching the trailer livery finds nothing at all. Where a match fails, dropping to the bare distinctive word usually recovers it.
Once the number is in hand, the full record is on the DOT number lookup, and the licensing side is on the MC number lookup.
Two more traps in this file
Corporate suffixes vary in the register itself, so INC, INCORPORATED and no suffix at all sit side by side.
And a group of companies files one USDOT number per operating entity, so a household name can return a dozen rows, each with its own authority and its own revocations.
